Waste and Recycling Management

9 September, 2026

Iwan WALTERS (Greenvale) (19:21): (1838) My adjournment matter this evening is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. Many of my constituents are increasingly frustrated and angered by the persistent problem of illegal dumping along arterial roads such as Somerton Road. A small number of offenders continue to use our shared public spaces as dumping grounds, causing environmental harm and significantly impacting both community amenity and the local environment. Last week the Premier and I announced that only the re-elected Carroll Labor government will duplicate Somerton Road from Greenvale to Roxburgh Park Drive, widening this vital arterial from two lanes to six lanes. So many residents have welcomed this great news, as this major upgrade will also eliminate many illegal dumping hotspots and improve lighting along Somerton Road, which will further diminish opportunities for the antisocial few who continue to dump their waste in our shared spaces. The action I seek from the Minister for Roads and Road Safety this evening is to inform me how the Department of Transport and Planning is working with other agencies like the EPA to combat illegal dumping along arterial roads like Somerton Road and to ensure that our roads are safe, well maintained and cleared of illegally dumped rubbish.
